Clopay Cable & Drum Replacement: The Tarzana Owner’s Guide

Clopay cable and drum replacement in Tarzana typically runs $130-$250 installed when we do the work, and most jobs are finished the same day we arrive. We carry Clopay-compatible cables and drums on the truck, and the technician who shows up photographs the failed part before quoting anything, per Clause 4 of The Haven Standard. You’ll usually notice the problem in one of two ways: the door starts tilting as it opens, or you hear a sharp snap and find a frayed cable hanging loose near the track.

The cable and drum work as a pair. The cable wraps around the drum, which sits on the torsion tube above the door. When the drum’s grooves wear or the cable frays, the door loses its balance, and every other component takes the strain. Left alone, a bad cable will eventually snap, and a snapped cable on a loaded torsion system is not something you want to be standing next to.

Which Clopay Models This Applies To

Clopay builds doors under several lines: the entry-level Classic series, the mid-range Gallery and Coachman lines, up through the premium Reserve and Canyon Ridge carriage-house models. The cable and drum setup differs by door weight, drum diameter, and cable length. A 7-foot door uses a different drum than an 8-foot door, even on the same model line. If you have an extended-height door or a low-headroom track, the drum profile changes.

The easiest way to identify what you have is to look at the sticker on the inside of the door section nearest the floor, or on the end stile. It lists the model and sometimes the door’s weight. If the sticker is gone, we match the drum by its diameter and groove pattern. On Clopay doors built after 2015, the drums are typically 4-inch or 5-inch cast aluminum or galvanized steel. We stock both, plus the matching 3/32-inch and 1/8-inch aircraft-grade cables. One gotcha specific to Clopay: several Gallery series doors use a tapered drum rather than a straight-groove drum, and installing a generic straight-groove replacement will cause the cable to stack unevenly and the door to bind within a few weeks.

On the OEM-versus-aftermarket question: for cables and drums, a quality aftermarket part made to the same spec performs identically to the Clopay-branded part at roughly two-thirds the price. We use aftermarket equivalents where they meet or exceed the original spec, and we’ll show you the gauge and diameter before installing anything.

Servo Garage Doors Tarzana is an independent service provider and is not affiliated with Clopay. We stock compatible parts for Clopay doors and also carry parts for LiftMaster, Chamberlain, and Genie openers when the job involves both the door and the opener.

Signs Your Clopay Cable & Drum Replacement Is Failing

Signs Your Clopay Cable & Drum Replacement Is Failing
  • The door tilts or sits uneven in the opening. One cable is carrying more load than the other because it’s fraying or the drum groove is worn. The low side tells you which side is failing.
  • You see visible fraying or kinks in the cable. Rust, kinks from a previous track misalignment, and age all contribute. A frayed cable won’t last much longer under tension.
  • The door jerks or shudders while moving. The cable is slipping in the drum grooves, so the door momentarily drops a fraction of an inch before the cable catches again. You’ll often see a polished or gouged groove on the drum when this is happening.
  • The cable has jumped off the drum entirely. This usually follows a spring failure or a hard impact. The cable is now wrapped loose around the torsion shaft or hanging in the track.
  • You find a snapped cable on the garage floor. This is the end stage. The door is now held by one cable and the opener, neither of which can safely hold it for long.

Replacement Cost & What’s Included

In Tarzana, Clopay cable and drum replacement runs $130-$250 installed, including both the parts and labor. A single cable replacement sits at the lower end. Replacing both cables and both drums lands at the higher end. If the torsion spring also failed, which happens when a snapped cable lets the door slam, spring repair adds $180-$340.

If you have a written estimate from another company, bring it. We’ll give you a free second opinion on it, and then we’ll hand you our own written price and written scope before any work begins. That’s Clause 1 of The Haven Standard. Every replacement we do in Tarzana includes a documented photo record when the technician leaves: you get photos of the failed part, the new part installed, and the door balanced and running. The 365-Day Done Right Promise applies to the work, and if it’s not right, we make it right.

  • Cable replacement (single): $130-$190
  • Cable replacement (pair): $180-$250
  • Drum replacement (pair): $160-$240
  • Cable + drum replacement (both sides): $200-$250
  • Torsion spring addition (if failed): $180-$340

DIY or Call Us?

DIY or Call Us?

The cables and drums on a Clopay door are under torsion spring tension at all times, even when the door is closed. That stored energy is what makes DIY cable replacement genuinely dangerous. The springs hold enough force to break bone or worse if released incorrectly, and the cable itself is often what fails first when a homeowner attempts a fix without the right tools. People lose fingers to this repair every year, and the injuries are not minor.

What you can safely check: whether both cables are still in their drum grooves, whether there’s visible fraying, and whether the door is leaning to one side. That’s the extent of it. If any of those signs are present, the right move is to leave the door alone and call. We’ll quote you the range over the phone, confirm it with a written price before any work starts, and send a background-checked, uniformed technician who will do the swap in under an hour in most cases. Call (424) 372-1317 and we’ll get you scheduled.
